An Overview of The 2022 Kia K5

2022 Kia K5

Kia’s newest vehicle in its lineup is the K5 sports sedan. Technically speaking, the K5 is a Kia Optima, as Kia seeks to stay consistent with its global brand image. (For example, the Kia Cadenza, which Kia no longer manufactures, is known as the K7 in other countries). With the newly assigned model name for the US-spec version, in addition to the newly designed exterior, the K5 is selling reasonably well. This is primarily because of Kia’s marketing campaigns in the form of TV advertisements and other targeted ads that are very helpful in selling the sedan.

In 2020, Kia sold 31,656 units of the K5 (its first year on the U.S. market) and experienced a sales increase of 60 percent within a time frame of just under a year that amounts to 50,711 units sold so far in the first half of 2021 (an extra 19,055 units more than last year). Kia still has the third and fourth quarter of this year to sell the K5, and the automaker is confident that its marketing efforts will help boost sales.

The Newest Updates

For the 2022 model year, there are no significant changes to the vehicle, but there are a couple of updates worth talking about. Most new Kia vehicles feature Kia’s new logo, which means the K5 is getting updated badging. However, some new equipment on the K5 increases its value by a significant margin, such as having a new Surround View Monitor on the EX trim, additional wireless chargers, and standard navigation on the GT-Line, EX, and GT trims. There is also a new vehicle package that Kia calls “GT-LINE AWD Premium,” and it adds a heated steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, LED headlights, Highway Driving Assist Functionality, including “navigation-based Smart Cruise Control Curve.

Pricing and Trim Levels

Kia offers five trim levels on the 2022 K5, including the LX, LXS, GT-Line, EX, and GT. Pricing for the K5 lineup depends on configuration and the amount of extra equipment, but buyers pay anywhere from $23,690 for the base LX trim to $31,090 for the top-tier GT trim. (Please note that pricing is subject to change to accommodate destination fees)*

Interior Cabin

The LX and LXS trim come with an 8-inch touchscreen, while the higher trims receive a larger 10.25-inch unit with Kia’s UVO Link remote, navigation, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, and wireless Bluetooth connectivity. The GT-Line, EX, and GT trims have a wireless smartphone charger, including a 12-speaker Bose Premium Audio System (only the EX and GT get the Bose Audio System). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available on all trims that allow consumers to experience their favorite music and apps.

Performance and Powertrain

Two engine options are available on the 2022 Kia K5, including a 1.6 L Turbo 4-cylinder engine that produces 180hp and 195 lb-ft of torque (standard on the lower trims) and a 2.5 L 4-cylinder that puts out 290hp and 311 lb-ft of torque (exclusive to the GT trim). In terms of fuel economy, the K5 does very well, with 38mpg on the highway and 29mpg in the city with the smaller engine.
